To bring about change through visual imagery

PORTRAIT DRAWING AND PAINTING

Painting of a reclining woman wearing a floral and grape headdress, draped in white fabric and holding a dark wine glass.

Bacchus — After Caravaggio
Painted by Fran Victor at the Uffizi Gallery, Florence, Italy

I painted this copy of Caravaggio’s Bacchus from my studies of his work at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy, continuing the long tradition of artists learning through close study of the masters.

The portrait brings together the softness of youthful features, the graceful gesture of a hand holding a wineglass, and the rich colors of grape leaves crowning dark curls. Luminous skin and flowing white drapery stand against a deep, earthy background, giving the figure a striking presence.

Working from the original offered an opportunity to study the subtle relationships among light, color, form, and expression. This painting reflects the careful observation and sensitivity to the human figure that I bring to my portrait drawing and painting—a commitment to capturing both a likeness and the individual presence that makes a portrait compelling.
